Cathy Spatuzzi

Chairman Cathy Spatuzzi has been active since childhood, from swimming and marching band to a 20-year career as a flight attendant. Certified in yoga in 2006 with Silver Age training, she now teaches seniors and private clients, inspired by movement’s power to reduce pain, stress, and improve sleep.

Cathy Spatuzzi

Since she was a young girl growing up in Ohio, Chairman Cathy Spatuzzi has been a very physically active person. Her parents taught her to swim at the age of two, always outdoors playing in the snow in winter and swimming in the pool in the summer. She marched as a majorette in junior and senior band. Exercise and her yoga practice kept her strong during her 20-year career as a Flight Attendant. Cathy realized she wanted to learn more and support others in being healthy. In 2006 she earned her 200 HR Yoga Certification and continued with additional training and certification in Silver Age Yoga to address seniors’ needs. She currently teaches fitness with private clients and Silver Age Yoga on Zoom.

Cathy knows that exercise creates feelings of happiness, a reduction in stress and can provide relief from depression, pain, and anxiety. She loves hearing her students exclaim “I sleep through the night!” and “It doesn’t hurt anymore!”

Helena Bray

Helena Bray is one of Silver Age Yoga’s original instructors and a beloved teacher since the early 2000s. With over 20 years of experience, she offers gentle, accessible yoga for seniors, emphasizing safety, stillness, breath, and the joy of mindful movement.

Originally drawn to Silver Age Yoga while caring for her mother, Helena discovered her calling in serving older adults through accessible, mindful movement. With over 20 years of teaching experience, she emphasizes safety, stillness, breath, and the profound magic found in simple, intentional practice.

Helena believes that “motion is lotion” and that yoga is for everyone—regardless of age, ability, or experience. Her classes offer seniors not only physical support, but peace, connection, and often “the best hour of their week.”

Butch Whitmore

Butch Whitmore has been part of Silver Age Yoga since 2011—first as a student, then Board Member, and teacher since 2015. He’s passionate about helping seniors stay active, connected, and supported through accessible, donation-based yoga and thoughtful modifications.

Butch Whitmore

Butch Whitmore has been a steady and compassionate presence within the Silver Age Yoga Community Outreach (SAYCO) for more than a decade. Originally from Iowa and raised in the Pacific Northwest, Butch moved to Southern California at age 26, where his journey with yoga — and with seniors — began to deepen.

Butch first joined Silver Age Yoga as a student in 2011. Drawn in by the accessibility and sense of community, he soon became more involved, serving as a Board Member before beginning to teach with SAYCO in 2015. Over the years, his connection to the organization has grown through his lived experience as a student, leader, and teacher.

What continues to inspire Butch is SAYCO’s mission and the meaningful connections formed before and after class. He has witnessed firsthand the powerful impact yoga has on seniors — supporting physical mobility, encouraging continued activity, and fostering genuine social connection. For Butch, yoga is not only about movement, but about community, dignity, and belonging.

As a teacher, he believes the greatest reward comes from watching students progress over time and seeing the joy and confidence they carry off the mat. He emphasizes the importance of understanding seniors’ unique needs, honoring their limitations, and offering thoughtful, accessible modifications so everyone can participate safely.

Butch is passionate about SAYCO’s donation-based model, which ensures that financial barriers never prevent seniors from experiencing the benefits of yoga. All SAYCO teachers receive specialized training to work with older adults, creating a supportive and inclusive environment where students can truly thrive.

Looking ahead, Butch hopes to see Silver Age Yoga continue to grow and return to pre–COVID levels of classes and participation, reaching even more seniors who can benefit from movement, connection, and care.

Empowering Every Body, One Breath at a Time
I’m a recovering corporate HR manager that recently discovered yoga and breath work. After losing my job in 2023, I decided I needed a break. I was in a low place in my life and couldn’t find my niche. After 23 years in the corporate world, I wanted to get my health back and get back in shape.

I was dabbling back and forth from Pilates, to yoga, to spin classes - never feeling successful at any of them. Then I met Maria, my guru. Maria was a 58-year-old woman that was large in size, she didn’t fit the “yoga mold.” She took me under her wing and taught me the basics of yoga. I went to Maria’s classes religiously and quickly noticed a change in my spirit, my heart was starting to open again, and I was feeling good about my physical improvements. Maria passed unexpectedly and it shook my world. After much thought I decided to carry the torch on for Maria and bring yoga to people that might not “fit the mold”. I become certified in May 2024, and received a specialization in Gentle Yoga and Silver Aged Yoga for older adults later in 2024.

I specialize in creating a welcoming, non-judgmental space where individuals of all body types and fitness levels can embark on a transformative self-care journey. My classes focus on gentle, accessible yoga practices designed to help students feel stronger, more confident, and connected to their breath and bodies.

Guided by the belief that yoga is for everyone, I blend calming breath work with a vibrant energy that makes yoga both soothing and fun. My approach is rooted in self-acceptance, growth, and healing, offering practices that empower my students to embrace their unique path toward wellness.

Whether you're new to yoga, seeking stress relief, or looking for movement of the body to ease pain, my goal is to support you in feeling empowered, balanced, and better about yourself—one breath at a time.
